Requirements:
- All applicants must appear in Person
- A completed passport application Form DS-11
- Provide original or certified evidence of U.S. Citizenship (i.e., U.S. birth certificate*, previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, Consular Report of Birth Abroad)
- Valid Government-issued Photo Identification
- A recent 2″x2″ passport photo. Photos can be taken on-site for a fee of $15 per applicant. Photo Requirements
Two (2) separate payments are required:
- The application fee of $130 for book (16 and older), $100 for book (under 16), is payable to the U.S. Department of State by personal check or money order only (no cash, credit or debit cards).
- The execution fee ($35) is payable to New Hanover County Register of Deeds by cash, check, credit or debit card. Additional fees may apply.

Passport Tips:
- Planning ahead is essential! Processing times are for routine 8-11 weeks and for expedited 5-7 weeks.
- Always check the official travel website for the most up-to-date information like processing times and fees.
- We cannot check the status of a passport application for you in our office. Look at the state department website state department website for an application tracker.

- Do I have to make an appointment to get a passport?

Everyone needing passport services are required to make an appointment in advance. If you are getting a passport for the first time or if your passport was issued more than 15 years ago (expired more than 5 years) then you will need to apply for a new passport in person. All minors under the age of 16 and anyone who has not obtained a passport as an adult will also need to apply in person.

Renewals for adults on unexpired passports or passports that expired less than 5 years ago need to be submitted by mail. Please note, we cannot process a renewal in our office, but we will be glad to review your renewal application before you submit it. Adults (18+)
Most new adult applicants will need the following documentation:
- Completed form DS-11
- Proof of U.S. citizenship (a certified birth certificate, naturalization papers, etc. along with copies of documents.)
- Photo Identification (such as a driver's license with photo copy of front and back on same page)
- A recent photo (there are very specific requirements listed online; photo services are available in our office for $15)
- A check or money order made out to the U.S. Department of State for their fees owed
- A $35 execution fee payable by cash, check or card
Young Adults (16-17)

Each passport requires an application fee paid by check or money order only made out to the U.S. Department of State. These fees vary depending on the age of the applicant, the speed of processing, and the type of document ordered. Adult fees start at $130 and minor fees start at $100.
A separate fee of $35 is paid to our office by cash, check or card. Photo services are also available for an additional $15 per photo.
