Sheriff Ed McMahon began his law enforcement career in 1988 with the Vermont State Police, where he rose to the rank of Senior Trooper.
To serve and protect the people of New Hanover County with integrity and enforce the laws of North Carolina and the United States of America.

The first recorded Sheriff of New Hanover County was in 1739, the same year that the town of Wilmington was incorporated.
In keeping with the keystone principles of “Professionalism, Responsibility, Accountability, and Integrity” Sheriff Ed McMahon has directed the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to submit to a voluntary assessment to determine if we meet the standards to be awarded accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
